A Winter Sunday at the beach

The Christmas Holidays are upon us and even though the temperatures are still quite high a walk through the wonderful landscape of this corner of Tuscany is very welcome for both the body and mind.

Monte Pisano, a small mountain range that divides Lucca and Pisa, is also very close to the lake and sea.  Only a few kilometres away there is a unique beach which is part of the Nature Reserve of the Park of Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli: Marina di Vecchiano.

Marina di Vecchiano: a beach in the Nature Reserve

An uncontaminated beach, four kilometres long, through the heart of the Park, where wildlife and nature reign.

On a sunny December day the beach is very quiet. I park the car near one of the beach clubs (closed for winter) and cross the dunes that separate the sea from the wild  scrub of Migliarino.

The sun is reflected in the water, and the beach stretches from the outlet of the river Serchio to Torre del Lago.

I am surprised to see how close the snow-capped mountains of the Apuan Alps are to my right.

I walk along the beach ,meeting as I go along people riding horses and joggers and I find out that you can book a horse trek at one of the nearby stables.

From Marina di Vecchiano to Torre del Lago in an hour.

After the walk on the beach I cut across the dunes along one of the paths that lead back to the main path and continue towards Torre del Lago.

It is not a particularly long walk. I proceed at a relaxed pace through the wood and reach Torre del Lago in about an hour. Once there I treat myself to a delicious plate of seafood spaghetti in one of the many seafront restaurants.

When lunch is over I retrace my steps back to the car, this time picking up the pace a little considering that the days are still quite short.

On my way back I take in the beautiful sunset over the sea: a perfect ending to a perfect day!

Travelling is my constant passion and companion, in addition to sports, motorbikes and good food. I am an ex-chef and, after years spent in the kitchen, I decided to reinvent myself and to study Tourism and Marketing, which led me to Montepisano Store. I hope you enjoy reading my experiences, because they are authentic and first-hand.
