When people visit Tuscany they might want to learn why local wines are so appreciated by visiting one or two of the myriads of wineries dotting the whole area. While the whole region is an ideal ambience for stunning wines, some particular districts stand out for having achieved international fame and interest. There is a little village along the Tuscan coast that symbolizes such an idea: the hamlet of Bolgheri. Your passionate and experienced tour guide is also a local sommelier and is keen to show you all the reasons of this worldwide success.

The tour starts in the morning when you meet your guide at a convenient meeting point. This can be near your accommodation or along the way from it to the coastal area of Bolgheri, depending on the best logistics. The guide will firstly give you an introduction to the whole day experience and will instruct on how to best reach the destinations of the tour. You will drive your car following the guide in a territory of splendid hills adorned by hilltop villages with many centuries of history. The drive is a great occasion to take breathtaking pictures of the Tuscan territory and its legenday shapes forged by centuries of farming traditions.

Once we arrive near Bolgheri, you will have a stop at a renowned straight boulevard of ancient cypress trees, stretching for 5 kms long from the main road to the village of Bolgheri. It is the ancient access way to the old castle of Bolgheri and it has a very important role in the Italian culture and literature, which the guide will explain to you. This is another great opportunity for a unique picture.

Once in Bolgheri, we will head to one of the most iconic wineries in the area. Together with a handful of other pioneering wineries around, this wine estate paved the way to a new concept of winemaking, later summarised by the slogan “Supertuscan Wines”. Your guide and a local operator from the winery will illustrate all the features of a real Supertuscan while you admire vineyards of incredible beauty overlooking the sea. The visit to the winery includes a visit to a panoramic terrace and the production cellar right before sitting in a lovely tasting room for sampling 3 wines: one Bolgheri DOC, one IGT and one Bolgheri Superiore DOC.

The day continues with a walk in Bolgheri where you have the chance to sit in one of the many local little restaurants for lunch. The local cuisine is famous for a lot of recipes based on wild boar meat, which you can easily find even as a simple sauce with a local pasta. Alternatively, you can opt for a delicious gelato in town.

Along with the pioneers who initiated the boom of local wine making in the 1960s, a lot of other local farms decided to invest in top quality wine especially in the last 4 decades. Many of such wine makers used to be producers of fruit & vegetables up to the 70s, but converted their production to delicious wines in more recent years. Today the district of Bolgheri counts over 80 wineries!

In the afternoon, we will visit a small family run winery, completely different from the first one, belonging to this party. Here you will be able to find an incredible combination of top quality wines and affordable rates. At this winery you will have the chance to walk in the vineyards and learn about any farming method they apply, a their new cellar, with the most advanced technologies. A wine tasting session will follow and it will include 5 wines served with little snacks. These wines will include one white and one rosee (if still available), as well as red Bolgheri DOC wines.

By the end of the day you will have a complete picture of the concept of Bolgheri wines and you will never be the same wine consumer again.
