Departing from San Giuliano Terme, in front of the Bagni di Pisa SpA Resort, proceed north on Viale XX Settembre in the direction of the river Serchio passing through the village of Orzignano and, along the canal, proceed towards the Puccini cycle route.
Now follow the Puccini cycle path for about 2 Km in the direction of Pontasserchio (the river is on your right) until you reach the junction near the bridge on the provincial road. Turn right towards Vecchiano
We pass through Vecchiano along Via delle Cave, where the stone quarries are located. You leave this road in a northerly direction for Via del Paduletto, a flat, quiet and traffic-free route, ideal for enjoying the countryside. Then again on Via della Barra along the borderline between hills and marshes until you pass the underground passage of the A-11 motorway.
From here we are completely surrounded by the typical environment of reclamation land, characterised by canals and small bridges straddling these lands reclaimed from the marshes for agriculture. It is not rare to begin to see the typical birds of the area : Grey Heron and Little Egrets among the most common. Through the locality "La Costanza" you reach the "Casa Rossa", a farm holiday home with horses.
From here we enter the marshland environment: proceeding along the marsh banks you reach the locality "Il Porto" near the LIPU Oasis. We leave our bikes here and continue on foot along wooden footbridges which take you inside the reedbed environment and up to some special observatories which afford a close view of the avifauna that populates the marsh. On the way back we resume the route after replenishing our water supply and if necessary using the restrooms (Oasis Lipu, Water and Services Point at the small "Museum of the Marshes").
We retrace our steps for a kilometre and a half until we reach a fork just after a small wooden walkway that crosses a canal with the characteristic "retoni". Here we keep to the right along the embankment for about 2km in a westerly direction, along the Anghetto Marshes until we reach a second canal which we follow to the left for a further kilometre until we cross a dirt road near the pumping station.
At the pumping station we turn right onto the bridge that crosses the canal and immediately right again, on the opposite banks of the same canal from which we came. We continue along this dirt track for about 3,5Km along the Riserva del Chiuso del Lago, after which we must take a left turn (southbound) following the canal and the dirt track that here can be muddier due to the lower level of the land we are crossing. Soon the road returns up to a higher level, then becomes a dirt track up to a farm (La Fagianella).
Turn left at a right angle and follow the dirt road that in about 2 Km brings us back to the bridge of the pumping station previously crossed. We cross it again and turn right onto a dirt track that follows the "Canale della Barra" (the ditch is on your left).
Follow the Canale della Barra for 4Km in a straight line, passing the motorway through the underground passage (about halfway along the canal) and arriving at a dirt road (via della Barra) which we will follow to the right.
Turn right on Via della Barra and we are back in the village of Vecchiano, passing through its centre following Via delle Cave, Via sant'Alessandro and finally Via Barsuglia until we return to the provincial road already travelled on our way to the reserve.
We turn left onto Via Provinciale and cross the bridge over the Serchio river, near which we follow the cycle/pedestrian path in the opposite direction, leaving Pontasserchio behind us and ending in Pappiana. Here we leave the cycle route (possibility of a quick visit to the Radico Museum: rural and peasant culture of the Pisan plain) and go through Orzignano again until we reach the same Provincial Road
We cross the Provincial Road taking Via Brodolini, to end our tour on quiet country roads: Via Brodolini and Via Matteotti in the direction of Gello, and finally Via M.L.King which takes us back to the San Giuliano FS Station and to the centre of the town at Monte Pisano Store.
