Departure from Montepisano Store in San Giuliano Terme for this itinerary to do in two days and which will surprise us with the long history, the thousand traditions and the many naturalistic varieties of Monte Pisano. Proceeding clockwise, northwards towards Lucca,we will meet fortresses and towers, evidence of the disputes between Lucca and Pisa; along the Puccini cycle-path, we will pass by Massaciuccoli Lake, a protected natural reserve, on whose shores stood a Roman Villa: we will encounter some important archaeological remains. Once in Lucca, we will take advantage of a short guided tour and a snack with typical products of the excellent cuisine, before leaving again along the monumental Nottolini Aqueduct and return to the foot of the mountain. From here we will go towards the Compitese area, a magical place, rich in spring waters where time seems to stand still: we are now at half way of our tour and we could decide to stop here, staying overnight in a lovely Inn, so that we will be able to visit the Camellieto, Historic Garden of Excellence and leave the next day in the direction of Buti and Vicopisano on the Pisan side of the mount. We will stop in Buti, another small village rich in history and traditions, famous for the ‘Palio’ before reaching Vicopisano with an organic farm and oil mill where we can stop for lunch with EVO oil tasting before heading back to Val Graziosa. Another surprise is expecting for us: the wonderful Certosa Monumentale di Calci, a Monastery that belongs to XIV century and which now houses the Museum of Natural History. A stop is a must before continuing on our bike towards the starting point in San Giuliano Terme.

During the whole tour a professional guide will assist the group and tell everything about nature and history of these incredible places.

1
0-4 km
Departing from  San Giuliano Terme, in front of the Bagni di Pisa, proceed North on viale XX Settembre in the direction of the Serchio river crossing the village of Orzignano and, along the canal, proceed towards the Puccini cycle route.
2
4-9 km
Proceed along the cycle path that follows the Serchio river in a northern direction as far as Ripafratta, where the cycle/pedestrian path ends. This is an opportunity to ride through the village of Ripafratta and perhaps go as far as its Rocca, a historic building in the process of being restored.
3
9-12 km
The cycle path starts again after crossing the railway and a canal. The river Serchio is always on our left up to Cerasomma.
4
12-16 km
At Cerasomma we leave the cycle route to enter secondary roads that wind up and down the north side of the Monte. We pass through Meati (at km15) and Gattaiola (at km 16). Here we can stop for a short snack and wine-tasting at the Fratelli Urbani estate.
5
16-21 km
From Gattaiola we cycle along the Ozzeri canal passing through  Pontetetto (at Km 19) and Sorbano del Giudice (at Km 21) where we rejoin the path of the monumental Nottolini Aqueduct (we will return to this point after our detour to Lucca).
6
21-23 km
We proceed North  along the straight path that runs alongside the aqueduct on grassy ground. After about 1.5 Km we reach the Tempietto di San Concordio which marks the entrance to Lucca through the underground passages of the railway station.
7
23-27 km
We ride up onto the walls of Lucca through the small barracks of San Colombano, on the South side of the city. The ride around the walls affords an excellent opportunity to view the whole city and to explore its alleys, streets and squares. The complete circuit of the walls is about 4Km.  At the end of the visit of Lucca we leave the city at the small barracks of San Colombano in the direction of the  Nottolini Aqueduct, going South towards Monte Pisano.
8
27-31 km
We retrace our steps along the spectacular eighteenth century aqueduct for about 4Km until we meet the San Quirico road. Before turning left onto the road we can make a detour to the small temple of Guamo, at the end of the aqueduct to admire a spectacular view of the city of Lucca and the mountains behind: the Apuans and  the Apennines.
9
31-39 km
We now proceed  along the quiet side roads that run alternately above or below the Lungomonte road. We pass through the villages of Massa Macinaia and San Leonardo in Treponzio. Finally we begin to climb up the small hill of San Ginese. Here is the first place where we can stop for the night if you plan to complete this itinerary over two or more days. Locanda San Ginese is the right option for refreshment and an overnight stay.
10
39-44 km
From San Ginese we proceed downhill, and pedaling along the mountainside we first reach the village of Colle di Compito, then we approach Castelvecchio di Compito, perched on a spur. Here pay attention while rejoining a faster main road.
11
44-49 km
We continue along Via di Tiglio on level ground for about 5Km to the village of Cascine di Buti. (WARNING: Take the greatest possible care due to traffic!). Finally you leave Via di Tiglio in the direction of  Buti.
12
49-51 km
After  about 2Km we enter the pretty town of Buti, full of springs and narrow streets. Possibility of refreshments in one of its bars, and to replenish your water bottles at one of the numerous fountains, before embarking on the climb that will take us to Vicopisano through Castel di Nocco.
13
51-55 km
We go up the narrow road of Castel di Nocco, which climbs uphill for a little less than 1Km, and then proceed easily downhill along country roads to the Serezza and the village of Vicopisano. In Vicopisano you can find both refreshment and a place for an overnight stay or a lunch with extra virgin oil tasting experience  (if you plan to complete the tour in two or more days). Rio Grifone is the recommended farm holiday home and the Circolo Ortaccio for refreshments.
14
55-66 km
Leaving Vicopisano towards the south, a level plain awaits us with several stretches of cycle-pedestrian lanes through the villages on the southern side of Monte Pisano: San Giovanni alla Vena, Cucigliana, Lugnano, Uliveto Terme and Caprona, characterized by the Tower on the high rocky spur.
15
66-69 km
From Caprona we make a detour through  the Val Graziosa towards Calci and its Monumental Charterhouse.   We warmly recommend a stopover and a tour of the complex: the Charterhouse in its monumental part, the renovated Natural History Museum and the Fresh Water Aquarium. Refreshment and accommodation at Agriturismo Terra e Aroma or Agriturismo Il Palazzaccio.
16
69-80 km
From Calci this beautiful tour ends after another 11 km of almost level roads on the south side of Mount Pisano, with short detours through the villages of Agnano and Asciano, until you return to San Giuliano Terme where you can treat yourself to a relaxing stay at the Bagni Termali di Pisa or reach the railway station to take you to your next destination.
