Ceramic & design workshop: the landscape in a box
Our Artists: Gabriele e Caterina
Studio17 is an artistic laboratory and a space for research and contamination in dialogue with ancient techniques and traditional materials. The atelier was founded in 2009 by Caterina Sbrana and Gabriele Mallegni, two artists who met and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara.
What we do
We will visit a real Art Studio in the heart of the Monte Pisano area.
We will be led by the two artists in a hands-on experience in which we will create a ceramic handcraft with a special meaning, a “landscape container”.
What awaits us
- First day: Studio visit (artworks, materials and tecniques) led by the resident artists- coffee-break
- Second day: Discover the two artist way of working, their Archive with samples and traces collected in the Monte Piano area-coffee break
- Third day: making of the ceramic handcraft, as memory of the journey, after choosing a peculiar mark from the landscape artists’s Archive
Studio17 is an art and design workshop deeply rooted in its territory with an international work experience. The two founding artists of the Studio collect many of the materials and textures that characterize their works and design objects, right in the landscape of the Monte Pisano and on the Serchio river, just behind their atelier.
Some of their iconic objects represent a sort of “landscape containers”.
In the first day we are going to enjoy a studio visit, a brief journey trough the work and the techniques used in the atelier.
During the second day the participants will have access to a part of the archive of casts and materials collected by the artists: tactile surfaces, plant casts, drawings of marble inlays and ancient iconographies collected in our area over the time.
Participants will be able to choose some samples from the archive that they will use, led by the artists, to create a ceramic box or a small artifact marked by a sign of the territory.
These ceramic landscape containers will be sent to the participants address once dried and fired, as a memory of the landscape and of their atelier experience. (shipping costs are included in the workshop price)
