Two days E-bike itinerary to discover the Romanesque parish churches and the rural landscape of Monte Pisano

This itinerary winds along the slopes of Monte Pisano and will take you to visit some of the most beautiful religious buildings of medieval art. On your bicycle saddle and accompanied by an expert environmental and tourist guide, you will discover the still little known landscape of rural Tuscany, with pleasant stops along the way to visit local organic farms and taste their products.

Meeting point: 9:00 am at Largo Shelley, 20  – San Giuliano Terme (PI).
The return to San Giuliano Terme is expected at approximately 4.00 p.m. on the following day.

First Day
  • 9.00 am meet your guide who will introduce you to the itinerary and the use of the E-bike. Luggage pick-up and start riding your bike!Along the way from San Giuliano to Gattaiola, you will meet the first religious buildings: the parish church of San Marco in Rigoli and the one of Santa Maria e San Giovanni Battista in Pugnano.
  • 11.00am arrival at Gattaiola with a stop at Sant’Andrea Apostolo parish church to meet the tourist guide who will briefly introduce you to the Romanesque architectural style on Monte Pisano.
  • 11.30 am stop at the 'Fratelli Urbani' farm: welcome in the vineyard and visit to the farm and  to the small and charming family cellar, wine tasting and light lunch with and local products.
  • 1.30pm back on your e-bike towards the near San Michele Arcangelo parish church, then you will continue to the Compitese area of Monte Pisano, characterized by the quiet  hamlets of Vorno, Pieve di Compito, Sant’Andrea and San Ginese where overnight staying is foreseen
From March to May the Ancient Camellia Flower Exhibition of the Lucca area brighten up the valley and during this period you can take advantage of events, like the Tea Ceremony and a visit to the Camellietum Compitese, or just enjoy the centuries-old camellias in bloom.
  • 4:30pm arrival at S.Andrea di Compito and on request a guided tour of the Camellietum Compitese . On the way from S. Andrea di Compito to San Ginese you can admire the beautiful San Leonardo in Treponzio parish church. 
  • 6:30pm check-in at your accommodation.

Dinner in a family setting and overnight stay.

Second Day
Breakfast at your accommodation.
  • 9.00am departure to Ruota, short visit to the hamlet and at the San Bartolomeo parish church. From Ruota you will follow the path towards Vicopisano: on the way you will meet Buti, another typical and historic village where you can visit San Francesco parish church and Church and immerse yourself in the country atmosphere for a coffee.
  • 11.30am stop in Vicopisano. Meet your tourist guide for visiting San Jacopo in Lupeta parish church: this romanesque building is fully immersed into the olive groves that characterize the landscape.
  • 12.00am lunch / tasting at Azienda Agricola Frantoio del Rio Grifone, in Vicopisano. After a genuine lunch with local products, we will visit the orchards, the vines, the olive groves and the mill to discover how a real extra virgin olive oil is made.
  • 2.00pm visit to Vicopisano hamlet: Santa Maria parish church, the Brunelleschi Tower, the Palazzo Pretorio.
  • 3.00pm the itinerary continues to the Arno River. You will cycle along the banks of the river till you reach the beautiful parish church of Santa Giulia, immersed in the countryside, just outside the village of Caprona. This evocative church, built in different phases and with different materials, bears witness to over a thousand years of history.
The last part of our itinerary winds along the Medici Aqueduct, an antique hydraulic construction for the collection of water that provided spring water to the city of Pisa
  • 5:00pm Arrival in San Giuliano Terme: collect your luggage and have a farewell drink or an ice-cream.
Useful information
E-bikes or assisted pedalling bikes; with these bikes even those who are not well exercised can face itineraries normally reserved for expert cyclists. The electric motor, powered by a battery, sustains you while you pedal and eases your exertion. However basic physical conditions are required in order to enjoy the excursion
  • The use of light hiking shoes or sneakers is recommended;
  • The Guide has the right to cancel the excursion in case of bad weather or uncertain weather;
  • The Guide has the right to vary the route and / or the destination of the excursion in relation to weather conditions, the type of group accompanied or any other reason that the Guide considers valid to justify such variations;
  • It is the Guide's responsibility to calibrate the pace of the excursion based on the level of training of the group, even at the expense of reaching the intended destination;
  • Minors can participate in the excursions only if accompanied by one or more adults who are directly responsible for them; minors are under the direct responsibility of parents, teachers, carers of all qualifications and grades or whoever is on their behalf.
Tourist Offer 2 days/1 night available after checking service availability; a minimum of participants is required.

  • Environmental cycling guide for the entire duration of the trip;
  • 1 wine tasting lunch at a farm (drinks included);
  • 1 night in a B&B or Agriturismo in a double room with breakfast;

  • 1 visit to an organic farm with lunch / tasting of extra virgin olive oil (drinks included)
  • 1 introduction to the Romanesque and guided tour of the village of Vicopisano led by an authorized tour guide

Booking and cancellation terms:
Maximum booking limit: 5 days before the date of the event. Deposit of 50% of the total amount upon booking confirmation. Balance due 5 days before the start of the tour. Cancellations: from 15 to 7 days before the start of the tour: 50% penalty; from 6 to 1 day before the tour: penalty of 75% no show or less than 24h before the start of the tour: penalty of 100%
In the event that the excursion is canceled by the agency due to bad weather conditions, the customer will be fully refunded
